Kate’s paintings explore the unconscious and intangible, mimicking the instinctive & impulsive patterns present in human behaviour and the natural world.
Often drawing on imagined landscapes, the paintings explore ideas of environment, impermanence and connectedness. For Kate, painting mimics the process of eco-systems through the building of layers that contribute to a form that is rich in diversity & harmony. With each individual component working in its' own independent way, following its' own rules & values and building a complex web that is often unexplainable and unpredictable.
The materiality of the work stems from an inquiring approach to process and an exploration of materials. Whether that be the conventional (oil, acrylic, charcoal, graphite etc..) or the less conventional (scrap metal, pine needles, tree gum, earth etc..).
The process involves a series of intuitive and thoughtful interactions alongside a large dose of risk and uncertainty. It's this unpredictability and exploration of the unknown that keeps the painting alive and with it, a deeper investigation of tacit knowledge and how we communicate through paint.
